Sport England has, after a six-month delay, opened the bidding for its second tranche of Sport Action Zones, aimed at generating long-term partnership-funded sporting opportunities in deprived localities. Eighteen zones will be created as a result of what Sport England calls a ‘competitive limited bidding process’. Anyone may apply, but the Lottery distributor will also be inviting interest from areas it is trying to target. This scheme places a heavy premium on partnership working; funds available from Sport England are modest, mainly for pump-priming (see Lottery Monitor, September 2001). The size of zones varies hugely and Sport England stresses that there is no blueprint to be followed. Applications will be in two stages: presentation of your broad case followed by detailed delivery plans for those shortlisted at the second stage. The 18 new zones should be announced in February 2003. If you are interested in applying, contact your regional Sport England office first to discuss it.

Application forms are available from the Lottery Line on 0845 7649 649; stage 1 deadline is 3 July; second stage closes 20 November.
