The Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru this month called for a single distributor, accountable to the Welsh Assembly, to replace the five current Lottery distributors. The party put its proposal in a question to the Welsh Assembly’s culture minister Jenny Randerson on July 3.

In her response the minister drew attention to the forthcoming Lottery funding review and said: ‘I am fully aware that there is some opinion in favour of a single Lottery distributor. There could be benefits to this and the issue will need to be considered fully as part of the Review.’

Plaid Cymru’s spokesman Emyr Williams says Plaid’s call is part of its campaign to reduce bureaucracy and increase accountability of government agencies. The party’s Welsh Assembly members have also reported public confusion and frustration in trying to access Lottery funding.
