Park pastimes
The Heritage Lottery Fund has released some research about the public’s attitudes to parks alongside a booklet, Park Life, which celebrates the fund’s £320m lottery investment since 1995 in restoring more than 230 public parks.
As well as confirming huge public support for lottery spending to improve parks, the research found, for example, that:
44% of parents with young children visit their local park weekly
29% of city dwellers visit the park weekly
84% would like to see their local park doing more to promote resident nature and wildlife.
Reading in parks is most common in the North West, where 84% of respondents have read a book/newspaper. People’s five favourite park activities (admitted to) are: playing sport, reading, feeding ducks, picnicking and going a live event. Download ‘Park Life’ (pdf) from
