The Community Fund’s poll undertaken by YouGov in January offers some stark reminders for the lottery boards of how little the public knows or cares about the good causes side of the lottery.
Asked why they play the lottery, 60% said ‘The chance to win money’, against 1% who said ‘the opportunity to support good causes’ and 12% who supported both reasons. Respondents were asked how much they knew about various lottery boards, including a made-up one, the ‘Disability Lottery Fund’. Those who knew ‘just a little’ or ‘nothing’ were: Heritage 88%; Community Fund 90%; New Opportunities Fund 94%.
Not surprisingly, when asked about their satisfaction levels with different lottery boards, people were stuck for an answer. Don’t knows scored: 57% Heritage, 63% Community Fund, 72% Disability Lottery Fund, 71% New Opportunities Fund.
People were asked which box they might tick given the option on their lottery slip to choose their own beneficiary area. Responses included: health, education and environment 26%, sport 4%, arts 2%, local charities and community groups 28%, heritage 6%.
