The Millennium Commission has launched a new programme, ‘You and Your Community Millennium Awards’. As reported in Lottery Monitor March 2002, the scheme will be administered by four agencies, one for each of the UK countries. These award partners have now been selected: in England the Scarman Trust will distribute £3.5m; the Scottish Community Foundation will distribute £850,000; the Wales Council for Voluntary Action will distribute £200,000 and the Northern Ireland Voluntary Trust will distribute £200,000.

Broadly the criteria for applications are the same as other Millennium Awards schemes, but the intention of these is that they should be able to accommodate the kinds of applications that might not neatly fit into one or other of the schemes being run by 100-plus award partners at present.

Individuals over the age of 12 may apply for £2,000 up to £15,000 (most awards are around the £2,000 mark). One key difference is that projects may only be up to six months’ duration, instead of the more normal 12 months. There is no repeat funding for projects. The schemes will probably end in March 2004, so applications will need to be submitted by autumn 2003. The Millennium Commission expects that its four award partners will operate turn-around times ideally of six weeks, up to 10 weeks maximum. The Scarman Trust intends to interview all applicants.
